A first-timer’s guide to massage

A first-timer’s guide to massage

46406233_SThough it may be hard to believe, some of our newest clients have a hard time fully relaxing and experiencing the benefits of a massage therapy session. So we’ve created a guide for first-time visitors to get the most out of their massage.

Many people don’t realize they should drink a good amount of water before a massage session. Working on your hydration will help the kidneys and organs process the toxins that are often released and flushed during the course of massage work. Preparing your body beforehand ensures you are well hydrated and ready to maximize the benefits of massage.

In terms of booking your massage, feel free to inquire with our friendly receptionist to see what type of treatment will work best for you. Communication with your therapist is always of paramount importance as well. If you have any injuries, sore spots, or preferences on pressure or technique, please share this information with your therapist. This is your time and we want to ensure you are getting the most enjoyment possible. If you have any concern whatsoever or would like the therapist to focus on any one area or adjust the pressure, just ask.

Make sure to arrive early. This will provide us with enough time to check you in as well as allow you a little time to unwind and reach a state of calm before beginning your massage.

During your massage, concentrate on total relaxation. Calm your mind and your thoughts and focus on breathing slowly and deeply. Some people will unconsciously tense or contract their muscles. Make an effort to surrender to total calm and enjoyment the moment.

Following your treatment, you may want to leave your therapist gratuity if you appreciated the service they provided. If you are unsure about the gratuity range, feel free to ask the folks working at our front desk. We look forward to your first visit! To book an appointment today, simply give us a call at 801-467-3529 or book online at Zen Massage.

Good rest is a great way to fight stress and anxiety

Good rest is a great way to fight stress and anxiety

49155530 - moonrise red rock country mountains surrounding sedona arizonaTaking time out of a busy week to book a session at Zen Massage is one of the best things you can do in terms of self-care. The benefits of regular massage include relief from anxiety, headaches, insomnia, stress, sports injury, joint pain, or soft tissue strain. A session with one of our therapists is a great way to unplug from a busy week and we encourage you to set aside some time to unwind.

In addition to massage, another great way to fight stress, anxiety, and fatigue is to ensure you are getting a proper amount of rest. With deadlines stacking up, digital overload, bills to pay, and children to care for, getting enough rest can often fall low on the priority list. In reality, getting a sufficient amount of sleep is your best offense in terms of tackling your to-do list. Here are a few helpful hints to ensure you are getting the rest you need.

  • The blue light emitted from electronics can disrupt your sleep cycle. Though it’s tempting to scroll through your phone or catch a show before bed, turn all electronics off an hour before you zone out to improve the quality of your sleep.
  • Consistency is key, so try to get yourself to bed at the same time each evening.
  • Reserve your bedroom for sleeping, resist the urge to work, eat, or surf the web while in bed. By reserving the space in your bedroom for sleep and relaxation, you can create better sleep habits and fall asleep faster.
  • Avoid caffeine after 5 p.m. This may require checking labels, as some pain relievers, teas, and weight loss supplements contain caffeine.
  • Try exercising earlier in the day as the endorphins produced after a vigorous workout can keep you alert and awake for a few hours.
  • Schedule dinnertime earlier in the evening as eating a hearty meal late at night can mean your digestive system is still active as you attempt to catch some rest.
  • Try using dimmer light in your bedroom; lower light levels signal your brain to begin making the hormone melatonin, which helps the body drift off.

Get glowing: Pampering your skin after the massage is over

Get glowing: Pampering your skin after the massage is over

41511305_SA massage at Zen Massage relieves your body of tension. You leave the table feeling renewed and refreshed. Have you considered this key benefit though? Your skin feels pampered! Why not continue the pampering every day? You can do this by eating right and drinking enough water. Proper nutrition might even be the answer to blemishes and other skin problems. Incorporate the following items into your diet to help maintain a healthy glow.

Water, Water, Everywhere
Remaining hydrated is the single most important thing you can do to maintain healthy skin. Many of the structures within skin cells that support collagen require water to effectively function. When your body is hydrated, your skin will be plump and elastic as opposed to tight or shriveled. If possible, try to drink water steadily throughout the day as opposed to cramming a bunch of water in a sitting or two. Consistency is key when hydrating, so do what it takes to maintain a steady intake of water throughout the day.

Kale. Find a generous load of lutein, often found in high quantities in green, leafy veggies such as kale or spinach. The antioxidants in kale can also help your body absorb and neutralize the free radicals encountered during UV exposure. One serving of Kale will also provide a hearty dose of vitamins C and A, which offer great support to skin health.

Dark Chocolate. Finish off your day with a square or two of dark chocolate. The rich flavanols and antioxidants found in the cocoa of dark chocolate improve circulation. The trick with chocolate is to avoid sugar-loaded milk chocolate blends and opt for a dark bar that is concentrated with cocoa. Though it’s tempting to overindulge, remember that you can get too much of a good thing. One service is enough.

Olive Oil. A higher consumption of olive oil can help reduce the signs of aging. The monounsaturated fatty acids contained in olive oil help to moisturize skin and stimulate cell repair. The vitamins and antioxidants found in virgin olive oil are of great benefit to your skin.

Kiwi Fruit. The large amount of vitamin C in kiwi fruit promotes the production of collagen. This connective tissue protein helps keeps skin firm and elastic. Kiwi extract is often aded to skin care products that slow or reduce the appearance of aging.

Bliss at home

Bliss at home

42883379 - a lit candle on a table in a dining roomThe benefits of booking a luxurious and therapeutic massage at Zen Massage include relief from stress and pain, as well as well as oh-so-welcome relaxation. Once you leave our salon, we want you to continue to soak in the warm glow and relaxing sensations achieved by your visit with our therapists. We’ve compiled some tips to create a relaxing space at home and encourage you to make your space a haven from the hum and buzz of daily life.

If you feel up to a project, painting your walls a calming color is the most effective way to create a relaxing space. Soft colors found in nature will create the most soothing effect. Avoid bright or harsh colors and shiny textures. Envision soft tones of green or blue, warm grays or browns, or mid-tone shades of warmed pink or yellow.

If you’re not up to busting out the paintbrush, an easy way to transform a room is with a pleasant scent. A bowl of potpourri, scented oils or diffusers, or lightly scented candles can completely change your experience of a room. Consider scents that are known to relax, such as lavender or eucalyptus.

If you are able, choose a room in your house to completely clear the clutter. It’s even better if you can banish electronics from this room to fully immerse yourself in unplugging. By fostering an environment that is tidy and free of distractions, you can commit to creating a space where relaxation is the number one priority.

If possible, try to incorporate natural, living plants in the area where you like to relax. These will not only improve the air quality, but they bring nature a little closer to home. If you aren’t a green thumb, visit your local nursery and ask for advice on hardier species of houseplants.

We at Zen Massage truly want you to make your wellness a priority. If you seek relaxation, stress relief, or recovery from injury, strain, or a tough workout, book an appointment with us today. We look forward to seeing you!

21719747 - lavender and gift cardDo you dread your beloved great aunt’s birthday every year because you can’t find a gift that will suit her wacky personality? Stumped on how to thank the dog-sitter? Not sure how to shower your partner with love? A gift card from Zen Massage is perfect for any occasion where you’d like to celebrate someone or express heartfelt gratitude.

We believe that the bliss of total relaxation is priceless but massage benefits both your body and general wellness.

  • The majority of people don’t practice correct posture. This problem can be exacerbated by work stress, which manifests in a tightening of the muscles in the shoulders and neck. Those who sit at a desk are prone to back and neck pain as well as weakness in the lower back and gluteal muscles. Massage can combat this tendency to tense up and help counteract the negative effects of a sedentary job.
  • Relaxation and stress relief can be provided by a visit to Zen Massage. According to the International Journal of Neuroscience, massage therapy can reduce depression and anxiety. Patients report feeling happier and more relaxed following a session with a friendly, trained massage professional.
  • The rejuvenating act of receiving a massage can actually boost immunity and prevent sickness. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that patients who received regular massage had a boost in white blood cell count. White blood cells help attack the germs, bacteria, and viruses your body encounters, defending the body from illness.
  • A session with our certified therapists also will improve blood circulation around the body. This boosts the supply of nutrients to individual cells and can aid in the transport of waste, detoxifying the body. Some of the benefits of improved circulation are clearer, softer skin and detoxification. (Be sure to drink a lot of water before and after any massage treatment to help clear these toxins from the bloodstream.)

This list is by no means comprehensive. Feel free to swing by Zen Massage and book an appointment to see for yourself. You’ll then understand why the gift of massage is truly a gift of the heart.

Long day on the slopes? Treat yourself to a massage.

Long day on the slopes? Treat yourself to a massage.

46807718 - skier skiing downhill during sunny day in high mountainsWinter means skiing and snowboarding season here in Utah, but all of that fun doesn’t necessarily come without aches and pains.

As our bodies age and our joints and muscles become more brittle, a day on the slopes can take a significant toll.

Have you found yourself waking up on a Monday or Tuesday morning, dreading the fact that you have to go to work?

Maybe your back, legs, or shoulders don’t take trips to the resorts as well as they used to.

Whatever the case, stopping in for a massage is sure to get you feeling better and ready to take on your laundry list of responsibilities.

Here are three areas certain to benefit from an appointment here at Zen Massage:

Improved circulation. As our muscles tighten and expand, our circulation is affected. A thorough massage can allow blood to flow more freely, leaving you feeling more vibrant and alive.

Tight muscles. Holding ski poles all day will do a number on your triceps, biceps, and shoulders. A massage is a great way to relieve the stress, and give them room to breathe and expand.

Deep tissue. Our muscle tissue is more than skin-deep, and while a surface rub is nice, a full body massage can provide relief from pain and soreness.

Don’t go another day suffering from aches and pains caused by your activity on the slopes. Come and see our friendly, professional team today!
