When Not to Get a Massage: A Guide for Clients

When Not to Get a Massage: A Guide for Clients

Massages are great for relaxation, improved blood circulation, and reduced stress levels. But did you know that there are some conditions when it’s best to avoid getting a massage? In this blog post, we’ll go over some circumstances in which you should not get a massage.

Fever

Anytime you have a fever, whether from a cold, the flu, or some other infection, you should not get a massage. Your body needs rest and time to heal; so don’t put extra strain on your immune system by getting a massage when you have an elevated temperature.

Contagious Diseases

If you have any kind of contagious disease such as bronchitis or meningitis, it is best to avoid getting a massage until the disease has run its course and you are completely healthy again. This is important in order to protect both yourself and your masseuse from catching the illness.

Blood Clots

If you suffer from any type of blood clotting disorder or if you have had blood clots in the past, it is best to consult with your doctor before getting a massage. Massages can help improve circulation but they can also be dangerous if done improperly or if too much pressure is applied on areas with existing blood clots.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women should always consult with their physician before receiving any type of massage therapy. While some types of massages can be beneficial during pregnancy, others could potentially be harmful to both mother and baby if done incorrectly or with too much pressure applied in certain areas.

Kidney Conditions or Liver Conditions

People who suffer from kidney disorders or liver disorders need to be especially careful about getting massages due to the fact that their bodies are already under extra stress due to their condition. It is best to consult with your doctor first before receiving any type of massage therapy in order to ensure safety and avoid further complications.

Cancer

Cancer patients should always discuss any type of massage therapy with their oncologist prior to receiving it as there may be certain techniques that could be dangerous depending on their specific condition and treatment plan.  The same holds true for people who have had cancer in the past; it is always safest to seek advice from your doctor before embarking on any type of massage therapy regimen.

Overall, it’s important for clients to understand that there are certain conditions when it’s best not to get a massage; fever, contagious diseases, blood clots, pregnancy, kidney/liver conditions, cancer, inflammation & uncontrolled hypertension all fall into this category. However, this doesn’t mean that people suffering from these ailments cannot benefit from therapeutic touch; instead, they should speak with their physician before engaging in any kind of massage therapy regimen so that they can receive proper guidance regarding what techniques would work best for them given their current health status & individual needs!
